Today is Saturday, September 7.

#647 - THE NEXT GOAL

January - Beginning of February: Intentional extended fast.
End of February - Early March: Intentional 9 days in Georgia.
March - Mid April: Intentional 40 days of ministry.
April - Early May: Intentional 20 days of travel/ministry.

This has been my year in a nutshell. Starts and stops. Running then resting.

Before my summer break from June 25 - July 29, there is a nearly 50 day stretch that remains.

In addition to my work responsibilities, maintaining my routine of writing daily, my next goal during this 50 day stretch is to be intentional about developing a routine of exercising daily for at least one hour

I must make my health a priority in this next season. No excuses.

Taking care of my health is an issue of stewardship. I will be held accountable.

#618 - 6 MORE DAYS

6 more days of focus.
6 more days of responsibility.
6 more days of effort.
6 more days.

6 more days till I can take a breather.
6 more days till I can take my mind off it all.
6 more days till I can disconnect.
6 more days.

In 6 more days, a well-deserved change of pace and change of environment, for the next 20 days, awaits.

Serve Faithfully.
Love well.
Finish Strong.

I will be held accountable.

#586 - 4O DAYS OF FOCUS

In 40 days, I will have the privilege of going to Cancun with my wife to officiate the wedding a friend from college. I will then fly from Cancun to Houston to watch my nephew graduate from nursing school. I will then have several days in Texas to enjoy a silence and solitude retreat. I will then fly from Houston to Oklahoma to officiate the wedding of one of my staff members. Then, I will fly to Reno to attend the Acts 29 West Conference. Then, I will lead our staff through a 3 day planning off-site.

In other words, in 40 days, I will spend 19 days away from home to enjoy and be a part of a bunch of exciting experiences!

But as much as I am looking forward to the 19 days away, the next 40 days are critical. The next 40 days I must be laser-focused. The next 40 days I must bring my A-game. The next 40-days I must leave it all on the field in the following areas:

VOCATIONALLY

  • Preaching 3-part Sexology series.

  • Preaching Easter Sunday.

  • Preaching first two parts of our series through the book of John.

  • Leading 5 Monday Night Prayer Meetings.

  • Leading 5 Staff Meetings.

  • Leading 1 Strategic Team Meeting.

  • Leading 1 Pastoral Team Meeting.

  • Pastoring/Serving Staff and Congregation through 1-1 meetings.

PERSONALLY

  • Reading the Bible daily.

  • Journaling Prayers of Praise daily.

  • Writing/Posting 1 Blog Post daily.

  • Posting a photograph daily.

  • Fixing bed daily.

  • Playing basketball 3-4 times/week.

Focus. Focus. Focus.

In 40 days, a reward of rest, relaxation, and renewal awaits!!!

#576 - THE NEXT 9 DAYS

Tomorrow morning, my wife and I will fly to Atlanta, Georgia. Half the time will be spent in Marietta, Georgia at a missions conference, and the other half of the time will be spent in Savannah, Georgia resting and relaxing.

Though I'm thankful for the time away, when we return there will be a whirlwind of events and activities in our life and in the life of our church.

With that in mind, in an attempt to maximize these next 9 days and prepare for the days following the trip, here are my primary goals and objectives during my time away.

WHILE IN MARIETTA...

  • Strengthen relationships with friends at Johnson Ferry Baptist Church.

  • Serve humbly, faithfully, and courageously as a Breakout Session Panelist and as a Main Session Speaker.

  • Connect and engage with church planters in the Bay Area.

WHILE IN SAVANNAH...

  • Rest.

  • Eat good food and spend quality time with my wife.

  • Finish first 2 messages in Sexology series.

For me, in the midst of chaos, specificity and clarity brings peace.

If you find yourself anxious or overwhelmed by all the stuff that's on your plate, I encourage you to write a list. Get it out of your head and put in on a piece of paper (or note on your phone).

Even the most daunting tasks seem smaller when they are reduced to a single line!

#555 - WHAT'S NEXT?

January is complete. I have led myself and our church through a 21-Day Fast that has been both eye-opening for me and fruitful for our church family. The question now is, what's next?

As I aim to make 2018 the most fruitful, productive, and God-honoring year of my life, I must be able to answer the question, "what's next?" with clarity and conviction. If I don't, focus is absent, days are wasted, and time is lost. As a leadership mentor of mine (Andy Stanley) poignantly states, "Leadership is a stewardship, and you will be held accountable."

Here are a list of questions (along with my answers) that I am asking myself that are helping me to focus that I encourage you to ask yourself as well.

Next major, short-term self-leadership activity goal?

Blog, read Bible, and journal prayers of praise daily.

Next major, short-term organizational leadership activity goal?

Diligently study/prepare for the 3 messages in our upcoming "SEXOLOGY" series.

Next major, short-term self-leadership productivity goal?

28 new blog posts. Bible Reading Plan completed through Deuteronomy 20 and Psalm 59. 28 new journal entries.

Next major, short-term organizational leadership productivity goal?

225 people at our March 11 Sunday Service for Part One of "SEXOLOGY."

#520 - ROUTINE. ROUTINE. ROUTINE.

It's gonna' be a great year. 2017 was great, but 2018 is gonna' be even greater. I believe this to be true because I have a one-word theme to guide me. Though I've heard of people using a one-word theme to inspire them during a particular year, I've never tried it myself. But as I sat down to set my goals this year, I knew needed something different. I needed focus. I needed a theme. With that said...

MY THEME IS ROUTINE.

2018 is going to be the year of developing healthy routines in each of the major areas of my life. Don't get me wrong, I had routines in 2017, but many of them were unhealthy

  • Checking social media first thing in the morning.

  • Checking social media right before I go to bed.

  • Finishing my sermons early Sunday morning.

  • Throwing my clothes on the floor at the end of the day.

  • Checking shoe websites, daily, looking for deals on Jordans.

Though there was nothing inherently evil about any of these routines, the fact of the matter is, these routines were counterproductive to me becoming the type of man I am capable of becoming.

These unhealthy routines prevented me from being disciplined in my study of God's Word, self-controlled in my spending habits, excellent on my job, and organized at home. These routines were destructive.

But today, that all changes. Instead of my routines being developed by default, in 2018 they will develop by design.

  • Reading the Bible and journaling.

  • Reading a book and writing.

  • Stretching, push-ups, and sit-ups

  • Flossing my teeth and fixing my bed.

  • Praying with my wife.

  • Filling in my productivity planner.

What I love about these routines is that regardless of the political climate, economy, social ills, and craziness that is happening all around me, these are the things I can control. These are the habits I can develop. These are the disciplines that, compounded over time, will result in a great life!

No money is needed. No training is needed. No help is needed. All I need is focus and determination, and on this first day of the year, I have a whole lot of both!

Here's to a great 2018. The year of ROUTINE.

#472 - 34 - PART TWO

Though I will continue to set other goals in other areas of my life, these are the four primary goals that I am looking forward to attaining before my 35th birthday!

  1. Runner - Run 700 miles and earn "Purple Level" on the Nike+ Run Club App.

  2. Reader - Read and take notes on at least 12 books

  3. Writer - Post 300 blog posts.

  4. Leader - Have 240 leadership development conversations.

#465 - MY MAJOR GOALS BY AGE 50

Failed goals.
Unmet expectations.
Frustrated plans.
Disappointing days.

For an "A-type" personality like mine, many times, these "bumps in the road" can be overwhelming and, at times, they can even be depressing. Discouragement can overtake me, and thoughts of quitting can begin to creep in.

But what I've found is this: my frustration is usually at its' peak when I take my eyes off of my long-term goals thereby putting unnecessary emphasis and pressure on my short-term results.

Craig Groeschel, Pastor of Life.Church says it this way,

You’ll very likely over estimate what God wants to do through you in the short run, but you’ll grossly underestimate what God can do with a lifetime of faithfulness.

In an effort to focus my energies on a "lifetime of faithfulness," I thought it would be a worthwhile thought exercise to think through the major roles in my life and write out specific long-term goals (and accompanying habits) that I can remain focused on and be faithful to even if the short-term results I'd like to see aren't coming to fruition.

By the age of 50 (in 16 years) I...

  1. As a runner, I run 10,000 miles. (50 miles/month; 13 miles/week)

  2. A reader, I read, pull quotes from, and reflect on 200 books. (1 book/month; 100 pages/week)

  3. As a writer, I write 5,000 blog posts. (25 posts/month; 6 posts/week)

  4. As a leader, I have 3,500 one-on-one leadership development conversations. (20/month; 5 conversations/week)

But enough about me.

How will you measure a "lifetime of faithfulness?" What are the simple daily disciplines that you will commit yourself to that, over the long run, will yield you the long-term goals you desire?

Determine. Commit. Act.

Your God-given potential awaits!
