#779 - ABOUT HOPE CHURCH

After nearly 75 days on my new job as the Lead Pastor of Prayer and Teaching Ministries at Hope Church in Las Vegas, here are 12 significant observations of the church/church culture that I am so grateful for!

  1. Staff is HUMBLE not pretentious.

  2. Attitude is HUNGRY not complacent.

  3. Mission is LOCAL and GLOBAL not confined.

  4. Congregation is ETHNICALLY DIVERSE not homogenous.

  5. Preaching is AUTHORITATIVE not apologetic.

  6. Singing is GODWARD not man-centered.

  7. Feel is INVITING not impersonal.

  8. Decision-making is SPIRIT-LED not hurried.

  9. Posture before God is DEPENDENT not demanding.

  10. Resources are STEWARDED not mishandled.

  11. Values are LIVED OUT not aspirational.

  12. Vibe is ALIVE not dead!

I am so thankful for Senior Pastor Vance Pitman, his family, and the leadership teams/staffs that have labored alongside of him for the last 20 years to build such a life-giving community of faith. What God has done in and through Hope Church over the course of this church’s history is a modern-day miracle that I can’t believe I get to join in on!

The church, by no means, is perfect, but it is a perfectly imperfect church that I am grateful to now call my faith family!

Heavenly Father, for myself and anyone else who calls Hope Church home, may we forever be OVERWHELMED WITH GRATITUDE for what we get to be a part of. May we never grow overly familiar with your presence and activity amongst us to the point where we take for granted what we get to experience together as a community of faith. Help us to remember, always, that our time/involvement at Hope Church is a gift to be stewarded not an entitlement to be consumed. I pray these things in Jesus name, Amen.

#778 - WITH OR WITHOUT YOU

If you never make the decision to become a developer of people in addition to being a doer of tasks, your leadership impact and legacy will forever be limited to where you are physically present.

Void of a commitment to development, the organization, department, team, or child will always need you to be successful. Your presence. Your management. Your input. Your guidance.

With a commitment to consistently and systematically investing your time in the intentional development of people, over time, here is what is possible:

  1. Their progress without your presence.

  2. Their success without your strategy.

  3. Their growth without your guidance.

  4. Their wise choices without your wise counsel.

When it comes to your approach to work and leadership you have a choice:

Will you work in such a way that for the organization, department, team, or child you are leading to be successful they need to be with you or will you work in such a way that whatever you are leading can one day be successful without you?

It’s counterintuitive, but it’s true:

The person who is best at working themselves out of job is the most valuable person on the job.

And this isn’t just a message/leadership principle for middle managers, directors, and folks not as high on the organization chart.

I think those that need to hear and heed this message most are senior leaders. Senior leader, if you’ve been in your role for 5 years or more, and if you need to be present for “it” to be productive, you may be unintentionally pursuing a leadership legacy you will one day not be so proud of — being needed.

#777 - THE LEADERSHIP LEGACY DECISION I'VE MADE

My primary ambitions through the first, nearly, four decades of my life have been…

  • By my late teens - make a name for myself by making much of myself. (I was a doer of tasks for the glory of me.)

  • By my late twenties - make a name for myself by making much of Jesus. (I was a doer of tasks using Jesus for the glory of me.)

  • By my late thirties - make much of Jesus by making a name for others. (I became a developer of people for the glory of God.)

But as fulfilling as my late thirties have been, as I conclude by thirties and enter into my forties (I still have until August 2022!), here is the leadership legacy decision I’ve made…

  • For the rest of my life - I will make much of Jesus by investing my life, primarily, into men and women who want to make much of Jesus by making a name for others. (I desire to be a developer of leaders who are committed to developing leaders for the glory of God.)

Questions to Consider

  1. What is your current leadership ambition?

  2. What do you want your leadership ambition to be?

  3. What decision/change do you need to make so that your actions can begin to be more aligned with your ultimate ambition?

#776 - THE UNPLANNED MOMENT

Never on your calendar.
Often an ill-timed interruption.
Rarely are you ready for it.
Usually feels inconvenient.

But…

Likely to be where you can learn the most. Likely to be where you can give the most. Likely to be where you can humble yourself the most. Likely to be where you can sacrifice the most. Likely to be where you have to be sensitive to the Holy Spirit the most. Likely to be where Jesus wants to use you the most. Likely to be where God wants you to submit to Him the most.

The unplanned moment of your day is pregnant with possibility.

See it. Seize it. Savor it.

All of your planned interactions may have nothing on what comes unexpectedly.

#775: 5 MAJOR OBSTACLES TO THE EFFECTIVENESS OF YOUR SUNDAY SERMON

1. HEARTS AREN’T READY.

Distracted. Frustrated. Condemned. Rushed. Confused.

These are just a few of the emotions that many of the people attending church on Sundays are feeling the moment they sit down for a service. Very few have prayed, to prepare their hearts, leading up to the service. Very few have truly worshipped during the time of singing. Very few have had God on their hearts for the majority of the week. Most, are just patting themselves on the back because they are in the building!

When it comes to your sermon preparation, what are you currently doing to address the obstacle of unprepared hearts?

My Suggestion. Pray more. Before your message. During your message. (Yes, actually take moments within your message to pray with your listeners.) And…after your message. Pray. Prayer prepares hearts.

2. MINDS AREN’T INTERESTED.

Their problems. Their kids, Their unmet needs. Their unanswered prayers. Their questions. Their sports team. Their lunch plans! This is what is on their minds. At best…your message is secondary.

Don’t be naive and assume just because people are present they’re interested!

When it comes to your sermon preparation, what are you currently doing to address the obstacle of uninterested minds?

My Suggestion. Build tension. Build tension stating a question that creates intrigue. Build tension by telling your listeners what’s at stake if they don’t lean in to what you’re going to teach. Finally, build tension by leveraging a message outline that clearly and compellingly shows where your message is headed. Tension earns attention.

3. LITERACY IS LIMITED.

Most people who attend Sunday services are Biblically illiterate. Very few read their Bible regularly. Very few do word studies. Very few understand the meta-narrative of Scripture. Most Christians live on a diet of Instagram post devotional Bible reading and YouTube clip eisegetical Bible teaching!

One implication, for preachers, to this heartbreaking reality is this: if your exegesis is accurate, but it is not understood, it is useless.

When it comes to your sermon preparation, what are you currently doing to address the obstacle of limited Biblical literacy?

My Suggestion. Speak plainly. Use simple words to summarize a long quote or commentary excerpt. Use clear phrases to make your main points. State big ideas, in a tweet-able form, visually, on a screen to reinforce the clarity of your speech. Reject the notion that simple is shallow.  Plain speech makes for a less painful sermon.

4. LEGALISM IS PREFERRED.

The natural inclination for most people following the listening of a sermon is to place more emphasis/concern on what they need to do rather than on what Jesus already did. Their obedience to the law weighs more heavily on their hearts than Christ’s fulfillment of the law.

Both believers and unbelievers are addicted to “works righteousness.”

When it comes to your sermon preparation, what are you currently doing to address the obstacle of listeners preferring legalism to grace?

My Suggestion. Show Jesus Christ as Savior and Substitute. Articulate explicitly that, in Christ, we receive both forgiveness and righteousness! Make a bigger deal of what Jesus already accomplished not on what the listener has yet to accomplish. Use your “gospel close” both as an invitation to unbelievers, and a reminder to believers. You’re not finished preaching until your listeners are convinced…“It is finished.”

5. UNCTION IS ABSENT.

D. Martyn Lloyd-Jones described unction in this way…

…you have the feeling that you are not actually doing the preaching, you are looking on. You are looking at yourself in amazement as this is happening. It is not your effort; you are just the instrument, the channel, the vehicle and the Spirit is using you, and you are looking on in great enjoyment and astonishment.

Preacher, do you preach with unction?

When it comes to your sermon preparation, what are you currently doing to address the obstacle of powerless preaching?

My Suggestion. Beg for unction. Beg for the Holy Spirit of God to come up over the top of your natural abilities to say something supernatural through you. Beg God to make you keenly aware of when you are preaching in your own strength. Do not tolerate preaching without power. Preaching can’t function without unction!

#774: 5 DAILY AFFIRMATIONS TO DEVELOP A DEEPER DESPERATION FOR GOD

Desperation is a catalyst for a praying life.
- Daniel Henderson

Desperation can come through crisis or cultivation.
- Ugandan Church Leader

The new job is great. To lead within the areas of prayer and teaching ministries is a dream come true. Hope Church is a faith family that I am so privileged and proud to be a part of.

BUT…

I have never been this desperate.

Desperate for God’s power. Desperate for God’s strength. Desperate for God’s intervention. Desperate for God’s wisdom. Desperate for God’s Spirit. Desperate for God’s hand on my life and my ministry.

What has this new level of desperation led to?

An intentionality and intensity to seek God and the power of the Holy Spirit in prayer, like never before.

Where has this new level of desperation come from?

Ultimately, it’s a grace of God. God has been gracious to allow me to see more clearly than I’ve ever seen before, 5 truths that have pushed me towards a greater desperation for Him. 5 truths that, if I affirm their truth often, I believe can help to cultivate, in me, a deeper desperation for God. Prayerfully, they can do the same for you.

1. MY GIFTING IS LIMITED.

Never before have I been more aware of the limits to my gifts, talents, and abilities. My ability to preach/teach, my ability to lead, my ability to write, my ability to shepherd—all of these gifts from God are impotent apart from the power of God! Never before have I been so aware that I can very easily fool myself into thinking that my gifts, alone, are sufficient for the task at hand. They. Are. Not. God’s gifts without God’s power are useless in achieving the eternal purposes for which He gave them to us in the first place. I am so desperate for God to anoint and empower the gifts that He’s given me every time I’m given the opportunity to use them.

Let no one deceive himself. If anyone among you thinks that he is wise in this age, let him become a fool that he may become wise. For the wisdom of this world is folly with God. For it is written, “He catches the wise in their craftiness,” and again, “The Lord knows the thoughts of the wise, that they are futile.” 1 Corinthians 3:18-20

Is there evidence for your awareness of the limits of your gifts in how passionately, consistently, and desperately you seek the Lord in prayer?

2. MY FLESH IS WEAK.

Never before have I been more aware that, apart from the ongoing power of the Holy Spirit of God at work in my life, my propensity and my leaning is to choose sin. If left to myself, I will choose laziness. I will choose selfishness. I will choose lust. I will choose exaggeration. I will choose pride. I will choose unforgiveness. I will choose neglect. I will choose going to food for comfort rather than going to God. I will choose the road that leads to destruction. Without God’s power, I am prone to choose the enemy’s poison. I am so desperate for the power of the Holy Spirit to help to live the life of holiness and purity that I am unable to live apart from Him. I am so desperate to be a clean vessel that God can use whenever and however He sees fit.

Watch and pray that you may not enter into temptation. The spirit indeed is willing, but the flesh is weak.” Matthew 20:41

Is there evidence for your awareness of the weakness of your flesh in how passionately, consistently, and desperately you seek the Lord in prayer?

3. MY ASSIGNMENT IS IMPOSSIBLE.

Never before have I been more aware of the enormity and impossibility of what God has called me to. Loving the Lord with all my heart, soul, mind, and strength. Loving others as I love myself. Loving my wife like Christ loves the Church. Turning a heart of stone to a heart of flesh. Causing spiritual truths to come alive and be received by physical eyes and ears. Making disciples of all nations baptizing and teaching them to obey all that God commanded. THESE TASKS ARE IMPOSSIBLE…in my own strength. That which God has called and commissioned me to do CANNOT and WILL NOT be accomplished apart from the power and presence of God at work in my life—to think otherwise would be delusional.

“Who then can be saved?” But Jesus looked at them and said, “With man this is impossible, but with God all things are possible.” Matthew 19:25-26

Is there evidence for your awareness of the impossibility of your assignment in how passionately, consistently, and desperately you seek the Lord in prayer?

4. MY ADVERSARY IS RELENTLESS.

Never before have I been more aware that the enemy is out to kill and destroy every purpose that God has for my life, and he will not back down. He wants to kill my intimacy with Jesus. He wants to kill my unity with my wife. He wants to kill my destiny on this earth. Every purpose that God had in mind for me when He knit me in my mother’s womb, the devil wants to destroy.

The devil desires to destroy my life and yours with distractions, temptations, unbelief in God, fear of man, and anything else that would cause us to lose sight of our King and the “good works” that God prepared in advance for us to do. We must be alert. The devil is not playing. The enemy will never stop trying to rob us of everything that is ours in Christ Jesus.

Be sober-minded; be watchful. Your adversary the devil prowls around like a roaring lion, seeking someone to devour. Resist him, firm in your faith, knowing that the same kinds of suffering are being experienced by your brotherhood throughout the world. 1 Peter 5:8-9

Is there evidence for your awareness of the relentlessness of the devil in how passionately, consistently, and desperately you seek the Lord in prayer?

5. MY GOD IS ABLE!

My gifts are limited. My flesh is weak. My assignment is impossible. My adversary is relentless. Yes, these things are all very true. But, the greater truth in my mind is—GOD IS ABLE. God is able to empower my gifts! God is able, by His Spirit, to help me overcome the desires of my flesh! God is able to complete the work that He began in and through me! God already has, through the life, death, burial, and resurrection of Jesus Christ, defeated the enemy! GOD IS ABLE.

The question for you and I is, “Are we seeking and beseeching the all-powerful, all-knowing, King of Kings and Lord of Lords who is more than able to do all that which we are incapable of doing?”

Now to him who is able to do far more abundantly than all that we ask or think, according to the power at work within us, to him be glory in the church and in Christ Jesus throughout all generations, forever and ever. Amen. Ephesians 3:20-21

Is there evidence for your awareness of the ability of God in how passionately, consistently, and desperately you seek the Lord in prayer?

Here’s the big idea. Until we seek the Lord more desperately in prayer, these 5 affirmations are, merely, words we believe in our heads rather than eternal truths that have landed on our hearts. LET. US. PRAY!

#773 - 5 IDENTITIES EVERY CHURCH-PLANTER SHOULD PRIORITIZE

How you identify, most strongly, influences how you behave.

People who identify strongly as “vegans” eat a certain way. People who identify strongly as “cross-fitters” exercise a certain way. People who identify strongly as “Dubnation” watch basketball a certain way. People who identify strongly as “Democrats” or “Republicans” vote a certain way.

The point is, how you see yourself most strongly most influences what you do or don’t do.

This is true in church-planting and pastoring as well. And after 8 years planting/pastoring a church, I’ve discovered 5 identities that, if I would’ve known I should’ve prioritized them, they could’ve influenced my behavior for the better.

1. SON FIRST. SERVANT SECOND.

Before you are a servant of your Almighty God, you are a son (or daughter) of your Heavenly Father. Before you are a church-planter for God, you are a child of God.

Before you are anointed to do gospel ministry, you are adopted into a Kingdom family!

Now, you, very likely, know these theological truths already. But, the question is, “Is your behavior being impacted more by your identity as child of God or as a servant of God?”

Here are 3 ways this identity can and should be influencing your behavior as a pastor/ministry leader:

  1. Sonship should satisfy you more than ministry success. Therefore, sons don’t need to frantically pursue success in ministry to feel satisfied.

  2. Sonship should secure you more than others’ approval. Therefore, sons don’t need to insecurely fish for the approved of man to feel affirmed.

  3. Sonship should stimulate you to worship more than anything else. Therefore, sons don’t need to idly await the blessings of God to feel ready to worship God.

Speaking of worship…

2. WORSHIPPER FIRST. WORKER SECOND.

Child of God should be your first identity. Worshipper of God should be your next.

When it really sinks in that you are infinitely loved by the Infinite God of the universe, made possible by the life, death, and resurrection of Jesus Christ, and sealed by the Holy Spirit—the only proper response is a life consumed by worship of this Triune God.

The proper response is worship…not work. Now, can your work be an act of worship? Absolutely. But for most ministers, if they’re honest, their work isn’t a conscious act of worship.

Many ministers just worship as a part of their lifestyle of work rather than their work being a part of their lifestyle of worship.

Like I stated above, you, very likely, know the theological truth that you were created for worship already. But, the question is, “Is your behavior being impacted more by your identity as worshipper of God or as a worker for God?”

Here are 3 ways this identity can and should be influencing your behavior as a pastor/ministry leader:

  1. Worshippers are more enthralled by the glory of God than engrossed in the sinfulness of man. More often than not, worshippers use their words to extol and adore God’s holiness rather than whine and complain about man’s sinfulness.

  2. Worshippers are more expectant of God’s perfect will than entitled to their man-made plans. More often than not, worshippers rest and trust in God’s will being done rather than worry and pray about their timelines being met.

  3. Worshippers are more floored by what God has done through through their work than frustrated for what God hasn’t done. More often than not, worshippers live with a sense of awe and wonder for the privilege of being used by God rather than with a disappointment in their unfulfilled dreams and visions.

3. PASTOR FIRST. PREACHER SECOND.

When I first planted our church, I identified myself primarily as a preacher not a pastor. Then one day, the Lord made something very clear to me. He said, (not using these actual words, but it was the impression I got) “Edward, you are a pastor before you are a preacher. Your preaching is merely a tool for shepherding the people of God. Though it may be your primary tool, it is not your primary role.”

Outlined in the scriptures are biblical qualifications for a pastor/elder not a preacher/teacher. The ability to preach/teach is a qualification for being a pastor, the ability to pastor is not a qualification for being a preacher/teacher.

Are there some who are called by God to preach/teach and not pastor? I’m sure there are, but to pursue church-planting and assume you are the exception, I think, would be a big mistake.

Church plants don’t need preachers who pastor, church plants need pastors who preach.

You may or may not agree with the above sentiment, but here are the 3 ways identifying as a pastor primarily and a preacher secondarily impacted how I actually preached:

  1. I started to love the people I preached to more than I loved preaching.

  2. I became more encouraged by people’s application of my preaching than their affirmation of my preaching.

  3. I viewed my preaching as one way disciples are made rather than the main way disciples are made.

4. SUFFERER FIRST. SYMPATHIZER SECOND.

This identity was definitely the most difficult to embrace in comparison to the others. But, it is also this identity that impacted how I pastored people more than any other.

Over the years, I learned that if I was truly going to be able to enter deeply into the pain and suffering of others, I was first going to experience and enter deeply into my own pain and suffering. I learned that trying to avoid pain at all costs was the quickest way to disqualify myself from ministering to people who were experiencing unavoidable pain.

I also learned that if I can’t see my brokenness, struggle, and suffering with sin with sober judgement, instead of being sympathetic towards others’ sin struggles, I would be arrogant, judgmental, and project a sense of moral superiority.

Here are 5 specific ways identifying a sufferer impacted my behavior as both a Christian and a pastor:

  1. Instead of seeing personal pain and suffering as an evil attack from the enemy to be prayed away, I began to see it as a precious gift from my Heavenly Father to be stewarded.

  2. Instead of seeing personal pain and suffering as something I was ashamed of and dealt with privately, I began to see it as something that I should be thankful for and wrestle with publicly for the glory of God and for the good of those witnessing the wrestling.

  3. Instead of seeing personal pain and suffering as the pathway to know Christ and the power of His resurrection, I began to see it also as the primary means by which I am able to know Christ and the reality of His crucifixion.

  4. Instead of seeing personal pain and suffering as an obstacle to ministry, I began to see it as the opportunity to grow the type of faith and trust in Jesus Christ that being an effective minister of the gospel of Jesus Christ requires.

  5. Instead of seeing personal pain and suffering as something that took away from my power for ministry, I began to see it as the only means by which the perfect power of God could be added to my ministry.

Do you want the tone and tenor of your ministry to resemble the tone and tenor of the ministry of Jesus Christ? Well, this is what you need to know. Your ministry can’t feel like the ministry of Jesus Christ, unless, you feel some of what Christ felt. Your ministry for Christ won’t feel like the ministry of Christ, until you faithfully walk the primary road that Jesus Christ walked — pain and suffering.

5. INVESTOR FIRST. INFLUENCER SECOND.

I don’t know a single pastor, ministry leader, or church-planter who would say that they don’t want to be influential for Jesus. Here’s the problem. I think most ministers under-estimate the investment that must be made for deep, long-lasting Kingdom influence to take place.

Ministers aren’t immune to falling prey to a “get-rich quick” mentality.

Unfortunately, many of us want our churches, disciples, ministries, and “platforms” all to grow faster than the actual investment of prayer, planting, and persevering that we are actually investing.

Here are 5 specific ways identifying as an investor impacted my approach to ministry and church-planting:

  1. When you see yourself and an investor, you don’t feel bad about asking yourself, “Is this person a good investment of my time, effort, and energy?” You choose your investments.

  2. When you see yourself as an investor, you don’t complain about long nights, tough conversations, and feelings of being emotional drained. Why? Because investments cost you something. You pay a price to invest.

  3. When you see yourself as an investor, you are crystal clear that the greatest return on your investment will not take place in months, but in years. You wait for your return.

  4. When you see yourself as an investor, you don’t bail on the person or the ministry you’re investing in at the first sign of difficulty or disappointment. You persevere through days when your “stock” drops.

  5. When you see yourself as an investor, when one of the people you are investing in is multiplying your investment, you give that person more time, effort, and energy. You re-invest in well-performing investments!

After 8 years of church-planting, one of the greatest joys of my church-planting journey was seeing several men and women who I invested in deeply over the course of several years be deeply influenced to love, worship, and obey Jesus Christ with more of their heart, soul, mind, and strength. I can say without hesitation, the investment was worth it!

How you most strongly identify, strongly influences how you behave. What are the identities driving your behavior as a church-planter and ministry leader?

#772 - A PUBLIC THANK YOU TO THE MOVEMENT CHURCH

Today, marks the first Sunday, in 8 years, that I was not the Lead Pastor of The Movement Church in Oakland, California. The full explanation for my transition out of this role can be viewed here.

Since my last Sunday, last week, I have had a myriad of mixed emotions. Sadness. Excitement. Confusion. Fulfillment. Doubt. Anticipation. Anxiety. Joy. So many feelings surrounding a life transition, away from the community of faith that I thought I was going to invest my whole life with, that I didn’t see coming.

But the feeling that has been strongest over the last week, without a doubt, has been gratitude.

Gratitude for 8 years of ministry. Gratitude for fruit. Gratitude for impact. Gratitude for memories. Gratitude for multiplication. Gratitude for opportunity. Gratitude for dreams being fulfilled.

But what I find myself most grateful for are…the people.

To every person who has given me the privilege of pastoring them at The Movement Church over the last 8 years, THANK YOU.

The love that I’ve experienced through your lives has left an indelible mark that I will carry with me for the rest of my life.

1. THANK YOU FOR LOVING ME.

Thank you for receiving me as your pastor. Thank you for caring for me. Thank you for allowing me to be an extension of the voice of the Lord in your life. Thank you for showing your love for me by loving, respecting, cherishing, and praying for my wife. Thank you for honoring me. Thank you for appreciating me. Thank you for following my lead. Thank you for forgiving me when I sinned against you. Thank you for trusting me with your stories, your struggles, and your sins. Thank you for inviting me into your homes. Thank you for allowing me to be me. (In all my foolishness and unprofessionalism!) Thank you for your thoughtful gifts, texts, and encouraging emails along the way. Thank you for enduring my confrontational nature. Thank you for persevering through our many tough conversations, both individually and corporately. And even as I told you I was leaving, thank you for your grace, kindness, and understanding. Through all of these experiences listed, I have felt your love for me. Thank you.

So many pastors have been discouraged and berated by the congregations God has called them to lead. This is not the case for me. Because of your Godly, heart-felt, consistent love for me, I move on to my next assignment full of love and anticipating how God may use another congregation of people to be an extension of His love for me. Thank you Movement Church family for loving me. I honor you for loving me.

2. THANK YOU FOR LOVING JESUS.

Today, I love, magnify, trust, and worship Jesus more because I have had a front row seat to your love for Jesus! You have obeyed Jesus. You have worshipped Jesus. You have sang to Jesus. You have sacrificed for Jesus. You have been honest before Jesus. You have given to Jesus. You have repented before Jesus. You have repented before Jesus again. You have received Jesus forgiveness for you. You have forgiven others in response to Christ’s forgiveness for you. You have read God’s word. You have journaled prayers to Jesus. You have come to prayer meetings and cried out to Jesus. You have done hard things Jesus has required of you out of your love for Jesus. You have persevered for Jesus. You have followed Jesus wherever He has led you.

Your love for me wouldn’t have been as easy to celebrate if I hadn’t been sure that your love for Jesus was so much stronger than your love for me! Jesus is honored and glorified by your love for him! Thank you Movement Church family for loving Jesus. I honor you for loving Jesus.

3. THANK YOU FOR LOVING THE CITY OF OAKLAND.

From day one, our mission was to overwhelm Oakland with love. I wanted our church to be in the city for the city. I wanted our presence in the city of Oakland to make a positive difference. I desired that the non-believers in our city would be positively impacted and thankful for our love. Because of your love for Oakland, this dream came true.

Thank you for your sacrificial love. Thank you for your generosity. Thank you for giving to the Be Generous generosity initiative each year. Thank you for showing up. Thank you for volunteering. For cleaning streets. For supporting teachers. For buying supplies. For meeting needs. For praying for the city. Thank you. Thank you for not being satisfied with being consumers of the Word of God. Thank you for taking the love you’ve experienced from God and extending that love to others when given the opportunity. Thank you for the service and sacrifice for our city that was never noticed or appreciated. Thank you for making commitments and following through with them. Thank you for all the ways you’ve loved the city of Oakland in ways that weren’t formally connected to the church. Thank you for the times you put yourself in a position to have less so that others could have more.

Over the last 8 years, the city of Oakland has felt more of the love of God because of your commitment to love Oakland. Thank you for loving the city of Oakland. I honor you for loving the city we’ve been called to love.

Movement Church Family…your love has been a most precious gift to me these last 8 years. I was not entitled to it, but I receive what I’ve experienced through you as a gift from my Heavenly Father. Thank you. May our paths cross again soon!

* For those of you who I didn’t get to take a picture with over the last couple of weeks, I’m so sorry. If we do end up taking one together before my wife and I depart, I’ll be sure to add it!

#770 - PSALMS 40:16 // PROVERBS 9:9

But may all who seek you rejoice and be glad in you; may those who love your salvation say continually, “Great is the Lord!” Psalms 40:16

Give instruction to a wise man, and he will be still wiser; teach a righteous man, and he will increase in learning. Proverbs 9:9

Heavenly Father, I praise your name. I rejoice in you. I am glad in you. Please Lord, help me to never grow weary in praising your name. I love my salvation. I love that you have rescued me. I love that you have turned my life around. I love that while I was yet a sinner, you sent your one and only Son Jesus Christ to live the perfect life on my behalf, die for my sins, and raise from the dead defeating death, hell, and the grave. Forgive me for the days when I take my salvation for granted. For when I do not appropriately dwell upon and worship you for what you have graciously accomplished on my behalf. Great are you Lord. No name deserves praise from my lips like your name. I love what you have done for me, and may what you have done for me be fuel for my living, fuel for my joy, fuel for my obedience, all the days of my life.

Lord, help me to be the type of man that never ceases growing in wisdom. As wisdom comes my way, help me to become wiser. Help me to truly be a lifelong learner of your will and your ways. Also, please bring wise men and women my way who are hungry for wisdom. I thank you for the people you’ve allowed me to disciple and raise up in your Word. Thank you for the wise men and women who’ve become wiser, in small part, because you’ve opened up doors for me to share what your Holy Spirit has, first, given me. I praise you for the privilege of being a pastor and a discipler. I am not worthy, but you are worthy of my obedience. Continue to increase me in learning, and continue to place me around people who desire to do the same. I love you and I pray all of these things in Jesus name, Amen.

#769 - PSALMS 39:4 // PROVERBS 8:15-16

O Lord, make me know my end and what is the measure of my days; let me know how fleeting I am! Psalms 39:4

By me kings reign, and rulers decree what is just; by me princes rule, and nobles, all who govern justly. Proverbs 8:15-16

Heavenly Father, I love David’s honesty with you both in this Psalm and all throughout the Psalms. There is a frankness is communicating to you how he feels, what he wants to know, what he desires from you, what he is confused about, and how he desires that you would act on his behalf. I praise you for being a God who allows your children to interact with you in this way. We are not entitled to the ability to be honest with you and before you. If you wanted to, you could smite us for every disrespectful and dishonorable way we may approach you, but you do not do that. You do not mute us. You do not require that we keep our questions to ourselves. You do not force us to understand everything about you, but instead you give us a model in David of one who dealt honestly before you. Help me to do the same. Help me to enjoy the freedom that comes along with being my full self before you at all times. Good, bad, or indifferent, help me not to play games with who I am before you. You already know. You already know what I’m thinking, feeling, and desiring. Give me the courage to lay the feelings you already know to be within me bare at your feet. You are worthy of my honesty with you. Praise you God for desiring my honesty. Praise you God for desiring integrity in how I interact with you. I praise you Lord and lift up your name.

Lord, it seems to that the Proverb above clearly shows that leaders lead by wisdom. Without it, they cannot reign, decree, and rule effectively. Help me to see this. Help me to receive this. Help to accept this. If I want to lead myself, my family, other leaders, your Church effectively, I am going to have to do it being full of wisdom. My own thoughts are insufficient. My own wisdom is lacking. My own approaches will fall short. I need wisdom from on high for every leadership opportunity and decision that you give me to steward. Graciously give me this wisdom for my good, others good, and for your glory. I love you and I pray all of these things in Jesus name, Amen.

#768 - PSALMS 38:15 // PROVERBS 7:1-3

But for you, O Lord, do I wait; it is you, O Lord my God, who will answer. Psalms 38:15

My son, keep my words and treasure up my commandments with you; keep my commandments and live; keep my teaching as the apple of your eye; bind them on your fingers; write them on the tablet of your heart. Proverbs 7:1-3

Heavenly Father, It’s you who I wait upon. It’s you who has the answers I need and want. It’s you. Not my wife. Not my friends. Not my family. Not those who I desire to respect me. Not the people in my church. Ultimately, I do not wait on any of these people to give to me or be for me what only you can give and be. They don’t have the answers you have. They don’t have the insight you have. I praise you Lord that I don’t have to be disappointed in whether or not the people in my life are doing, thinking, being, or responding how I think they should in the timing they should. I wait upon you. Your sovereign hand. Your sovereign timing. Your sovereign plan. I wait on you, and I praise you for being worthy of being waited on, no matter how long it may take. I wait on you for timing. I wait on you for resources. I wait on you for opportunity. I wait on you for insight. I wait on you for guidance. I wait on you for next steps. I take responsibility for everything I know to do and am convicted by you to do, and I wait on you for everything else. I love you Lord, and may my waiting on you be worship unto you.

Lord, these proverbs that you are exposing me to and speaking to me through are so life-giving and helpful. I do desire to keep, bind, and write them on my heart as you instruct. Please give me a strategy. Please give me a conviction. Please help me to memorize the Proverbs that you would lead me to memorize. I want to keep them close. I want to keep them accessible. I want to be able to access the goodness of your commands and precepts whenever the time calls for it. I praise you for the words from your Word that I do have written on my heart. Give me a desire for more. I love you Lord and l love your Word. Saturate me with it. Give me a supernatural ability to remember and recall more of what I read. I pray all of these things in Jesus name, Amen.

#767 - PSALMS 37:4-5 // PROVERBS 6:9-11

Delight yourself in the Lord, and he will give you the desires of your heart. Commit your way to the Lord; trust in him, and he will act. Psalms 37:4-5

How long will you lie there, O sluggard? When will you arise from your sleep? A little sleep, a little slumber, a little folding of the hands to rest, and poverty will come upon you like a robber, and want like an armed man. Proverbs 6:9-11

Heavenly Father, I love, praise, adore, and thank you for the ways that Psalms 37:4-5 has come to pass in my life. I thank you for how you have been true to this word all throughout my life. I have seen time and time again that as I pursue you, as I commit my ways to you, as I seek first your Kingdom and your righteousness, you act. You respond. You give. You bless. You have been so kind to bless me with the desires of my heart over the years. Desires for friendship. Desires for influence. Desires for opportunity. Desires for financial increase. Desire for Kingdom impact. Desires for rest, relaxation, and rejuvenation. You have given me all these desires. In your grace. In your mercy. You’ve given me all of these things as I’ve sought to delight myself in you. Thank you for your faithfulness and kindness to me.

Lord, keep me from laziness. Keep me from an attitude about rest that is not of you. Keep me from an approach to rest and “taking care of myself” that is, in reality, bad stewardship of my time, talents, resources, and responsibilities. You know that I am prone to more rest than I need. Forgive me for the times when I have not been more faithful with my time. I do not want poverty to come upon me. I do not want destruction to come upon me, my family, and my church. I do not want to accomplish anything less than what you’ve fashioned me to accomplish and produce for you. Keep me from the laziness that will sabotage your purpose for my life. I love you Lord and I thank you that these Proverbs continue to give me the warnings I need. I pray all of this in Jesus name, Amen.

#766 - PSALMS 36:5-6 // PROVERBS 5:22

Your steadfast love, O Lord, extends to the heavens, your faithfulness to the clouds. Your righteousness is like the mountains of God; your judgments are like the great deep; man and beast you save, O Lord.

The iniquities of the wicked ensnare him, and he is held fast in the cords of his sin. Proverbs 5:22

Heavenly Father, I praise you for a love that is a deep, wide, high, and massive. Help me to see your love, faithfulness, righteousness, and judgements as David did. Everything about you is immense. There is an immensity and enormity to who you are and what you do. Help me to never put you in a box. Help me to perceive you as you are. Strong. Mighty. Powerful. I worship you for your immensity. I worship you for the depth, height, and width of your being and attributes. Keep me amazed. Keep me enthralled. I love you Lord and worship you. You are worthy of my highest praise.

Lord, keep me aware of the danger of sin. Keep me aware of the entrapments. Keep me cognizant of destructive sexual sin can be to my life. Sin will bind me, hold me captive, and keep me from your best for me. Please help me not to take sin lightly. Keep me on my toes. Help me to remember that sin is crouching at my door at all times. Thank you Lord for all the ways in which you have done this over the years. Thank you for untangling me when I have been tangled in sin. Thank you for loosing me from sin when I have been held captive by it. You have been so kind in that way. So faithful. I love you Lord and I pray all of this in Jesus name, Amen.

#765 - PSALMS 35:27 // PROVERBS 4:26

Let those who delight in my righteousness shout for joy and be glad and say evermore, “Great is the Lord, who delights in the welfare of his servant!” Psalms 35:27

Ponder the path of your feet; then all your ways will be sure. Proverbs 4:26

Heavenly Father, there are many people who love me, support me, desire your best for me, and see your righteousness in me. Thank you for these friends. Thank you for these family members. Thank you for these brothers and sisters inside our church and outside our church who you’ve surrounded me with. I am blessed. May you be more beautiful to these friends because of what they see and support you doing in my life. May you become more glorious. May you become more worthy of praise. May others support of me and what you’re doing in my life result in greater praise of YOU! You, alone, are worthy. Anything you do in and through me is not, ultimately, so people will love me, it is so that people will see you! Be magnified in and through my life now and forevermore. I love you Lord God! For your glory alone. For your glory alone do I live and move and have my being.

Lord, help me to take heed the wisdom of pondering my paths. Help me to think deeply about the decisions I make, the paths I take, and the possibilities before me. May my pondering include prayer, the seeking of wise counsel, consideration of the consequences of my decisions and how they will impact everyone involved. I desire my ways to be sure. Help me to not be hasty in my decisions. Help to honor you by thinking though them thoroughly. I love you. I praise you. I thank you for the wisdom of your word. In Jesus name I pray, Amen.

#764 - PSALMS 34:8 // PROVERBS 3:9-10

Oh, taste and see that the Lord is good! Psalms 34:8

Honor the Lord with your wealth and with the firstfruits of all your produce; then your barns will be filled with plenty, and your vats will be bursting with wine. Proverbs 3:9-10

Heavenly Father, for so long, my relationship with you wasn’t something that was characterized by “tasting good.” For so long, it was religious duty. For so long it was burdensome, boring, and heavy. Over the last 10 years or so, I have “tasted” and I have “seen.” It has gone from a cerebral understanding to an experiential knowing of your goodness. Thanks for this gift! Thanks for this desire from you to know that you are good in this way! Keep me persistent in this pursuit. Help me not be satisfied with a version of you that I cannot taste or see. Keep my affections strong. Keep my affections “white hot.” You are worthy. You are the only truly “tasteful” thing worth me feasting upon.

Lord, help me to honor you with my financial resources. Help me to worship you with my money. Help me to put you first with my financial resources and not last. Help me to give you my best and not my leftovers. There is a promise of always having enough and even more when I emphasize honoring you with my money. Help me to see the wisdom in this. Help me to lead others to see the wisdom in this. You are the giver. You are the provider. Help me to not behave with my money like that’s not the case! It’s all yours. I am merely a steward! I love you Lord. I thank you for this time today in your Word. I thank you for relationship with you. I am so fulfilled in it and by it. I pray all of this in Jesus name, Amen.

#763 - PSALMS 33:10-12 // PROVERBS 2:6-8

The Lord brings the counsel of the nations to nothing; he frustrates the plans of the peoples. The counsel of the Lord stands forever, the plans of his heart to all generations. Blessed is the nation whose God is the Lord, the people whom he has chosen as his heritage! Psalm 33:10-12

For the Lord gives wisdom; from his mouth come knowledge and understanding; he stores up sound wisdom for the upright; he is a shield to those who walk in integrity, guarding the paths of justice and watching over the way of his saints. Proverbs 2:6-8

Heavenly Father, it will be your counsel that stands. It will be your precepts that endure. It will be your plans that will prevail. I praise you for your strength. I praise you for your power. I praise you as the only one who will overcome in every way! Even the brightest rulers, advisors, scientists, and future planners can have their plans thwarted by you if you decide to do so. Their counsel is temporary. Your counsel is eternal. Their counsel is helpful. Your counsel is powerful! Your plans will endure! I praise you Lord for this truth.

I thank you Lord for the hope and truth in this proverb. I thank you Lord for the promise that as I pursue living upright, you will have wisdom stored up for me. I cannot exhaust the wisdom that you have for me. You will always have more. You have storehouses of wisdom in store for me! I praise and thank you that as I seek it out, you will provide it for me. I look forward to the wisdom that you will bless me with in the coming years and months as I become more intentional about pursuing it. I love you Lord. I thank you for this precept and promise. I pray this in Jesus name, Amen.

#762 - PSALMS 32:3-5 // PROVERBS 1:24-27

For when I kept silent, my bones wasted away through my groaning all day long. For day and night your hand was heavy upon me; my strength was dried up as by the heat of summer. I acknowledged my sin to you, and I did not cover my iniquity; I said, “I will confess my transgressions to the Lord,” and you forgave the iniquity of my sin. Psalm 32:3-5

Because I have called and you refused to listen, have stretched out my hand and no one has heeded, because you have ignored all my counsel and would have none of my reproof, I also will laugh at your calamity; I will mock when terror strikes you, when terror strikes you like a storm and your calamity comes like a whirlwind, when distress and anguish come upon you. Proverbs 1:24-27

Heavenly Father, I know what it feels like to have unconfessed sin. I know the feelings David describes above. I know what it feels like to be dying on the inside because I have not yet been honest about how I’ve sinned against you with you or with others. I praise you God for delivering me from this type of hiding and covering up. I thank you Lord for revealing to me how I could be free if I just confessed and received your grace and mercy. The level of inner turmoil that comes along with unconfessed sin is heavy. I remember seasons of living with unconfessed sin like walking around with a ball and chain. Thank you for setting me free. Use me as a voice in this generation to set others free from this “wasting away” through faith in the good news. As I have been revived, renewed, and reinvigorated through confession of sin and reception of grace, help me to renew others.

Lord, help me to heed the voice of wisdom. As I read and re-read proverbs, help my heart not to grow numb to the voice of wisdom. Help me to be convicted where I need to be convicted and help me to respond in obedience to those convictions. Or, wisdom will mock me when I fall. Wisdom will laugh. Wisdom will not have mercy. If I choose to live a foolish life after seeing clearly the path of the wise, wisdom will not feel bad for me. Thank you for this sobering truth. Thank you for this reality check. Give me an urgency for heeding your wisdom. Lest, wisdom mocks my foolishness. I pray this in Jesus name, Amen.

#761 - PSALMS 31:24 // PROVERBS 31:10

Be strong, and let your heart take courage, all you who wait for the Lord! Psalm 31:24

An excellent wife who can find? She is far more precious than jewels. Proverbs 31:10

Heavenly Father, I need to wait on you. You are worthy of being waited on. I praise you for how you’ve honored how I’ve waited on you in the past. I thank you. But now, I must wait on you again. For the next season in my life to get underway, I must finish this season well. I must wait on your timing for things to move forward. I must wait on how you will act in the lives of others. I must wait, and I bless your name for giving me this opportunity to wait. Your word promises that in my waiting, you will renew my strength. Give my heart courage Lord as I wait on you. You have perfect timing. You have a perfect way. Waiting on you is waiting for perfection. Thank you for wanting to give me nothing less than perfect timing. I praise your name, and will wait for you in whatever form or fashion you call me to for as long as you call me to! You are worthy!

I praise you Lord for my wife. I praise you for her grace. Her kindness. Her patience. The way she serves me, thinks about me, prefers me. I have found an excellent wife, she is more precious than jewels, and it is only by your grace that this is true. Thank you Lord for 16+ years of marriage in which every year we have grown closer to you and closer to each other. Help me Lord to honor my wife as the precious gift that she is to me. I repent for the many ways in which I have failed to do this. I repent for the ways in which I’ve taken your gift to me for granted. I repent for not loving as you have loved the church. Help me Lord. I am in desperate need of your Holy Spirit power to be the husband that you have called me to be. I need your Holy Spirit to be the husband that my wife needs to see you, glorify you, and surrender every part of her life to you. Strengthen me Lord by your hand. I pray all of this in Jesus name, Amen.

#760 - PSALMS 30:4-5 // PROVERBS 30:5-6

Sing praises to the Lord, O you his saints, and give thanks to his holy name. For his anger is but for a moment, and his favor is for a lifetime. Weeping may tarry for the night, but joy comes with the morning. Psalm 30:4-5

Every word of God proves true; he is a shield to those who take refuge in him. Do not add to his words, lest he rebuke you and you be found a liar. Proverbs 30:5-6

Heavenly Father, I thank and praise you for your “momentary anger.” On many occasions, I have felt this anger towards me, but I am so thankful that you do not stay angry with me. In Christ, I am forgiven. In Christ, I am cleansed. In Christ, I am rescued from your anger and your wrath. And instead, I have your favor, blessing, and approval. I could not live under an anger from you that was prolonged. I could not have joy. I could not have peace. I could not have rest. Thank you Lord that your favor is what I should feel more than your anger. You have more favor towards me than you have anger. Thank you Lord! Though seasons of darkness and despair are inevitable, seasons of joy and gladness are equally inevitable and eventually, they will be eternal! I praise your name!

Your word is sufficient. What you have spoken is enough. What has been revealed through your Word has all everyone needs for a life of godliness and contentment. Every word you have spoken has come to pass and will come to pass. It was completed before you spoke it! Lord, help me to see your word as sufficient as it is. Give me the confidence to wholeheartedly believe in the sufficiency of your word that it shows up in my preaching and teaching. May my words only be used to bring to greater clarity and light your words. May my words help to show people the importance of your Word. I praise you Lord for how you’ve called me to use words, but help me to never add to your words. Help me Lord. Help me. I love you Lord. In Jesus name, Amen.
